We took Communion in joy–
for once–
drinking that bitter cup
with jubilation.
“Drink and enjoy.”
And I did,
looking up at my Saviour
with adoration.

So was this the first time since leaving the AC Church?

Actually, we’ve taken Communion quite a few times at our Bible church in Dallas, and although I didn’t write poems about them, they are often very intimate and soul-searching times.

The Communion experience that inspired this poem was actually at a Presbyterian church near us that we visited not long ago. The pastor was such a solid teacher, and he really brought joy into his message and into the Communion service. His approach reminded me of John Piper’s teachings on Christian hedonism, if you’re familiar with that.

  1. I think one of the greatest problems we have here in the UK is a lack of joy in a Communion Service (well, in yer traditional CofE church at least) – a SiC put it very well yesterday 😉 See my blog post.
