Ash Wednesday, 2014

Today begins the church’s springtime, Lent–
and we got snow this afternoon.
I caught some plump flakes on my tongue.
Perhaps it is ash falling down on everyone,
bedecking us in mortality.

It’ll melt.

I walked a new piece of land this morning,
and discovered rose bushes between the honeysuckle weeds,
growing out of frozen ground. Everything is
like winter, but there are plans for spring
pulsing up. There cannot be everlasting winter.
We are not made for that.
