Poem 9, National Poetry Month: “I am going off to see…”

I am going off to see
Madeleine’s good friend Luci
and to find what makes a friend
a friend in this wild
contra-frivolous work of writing.
We have all had our hearts set on fire.
We could rush to a hydrant
to extinguish an eternal torch, if we dared. But

I would rather step up to this burning
bush to ask, “What is this burning?”
and “Why does it burn without burning up?”
There may be a friend within this horrid
heat, or maybe one beside me, barefoot.
